Ways to Wear a Maxi Dress in Spring
Hello hello!
Does today feel like Friday or is it just me?
The highlight of the week this week was meeting HITHA! She was in town for a work engagement and we finally got to meet in person after years of being internet friends! We grabbed drinks and dinner with Coco and Molly. (I went back to Cindy's for the first time in…four years?!) It was the BEST.
I am definitely moving slowly today after lots of wine and also June decided to wake up at 6am. Anyway, I hope you've had a bright spot in your week as well whatever that may be. I think you're going to love today's blog post because it's got lots of great transitional style ideas for you on how to style a maxi dress! (Plus, if you're in the market for a new dress, I've got a good one for you!)
How to Style a Maxi Dress
So first…let's talk about the dress!
Able's Jane Maxi is what I'll be styling many ways here! I'll get into why it's great in a second, but first, let me share more about the brand in case you aren't familiar.
ABLE is based in Nashville and was founded by a husband-wife team, Barrett and Rachel Ward, as a solution to addressing poverty in various communities by employing women, providing them with ongoing training and opportunities to lift themselves, their families, and communities up with them.
The company started when they met three women in Ethiopia coming out of the commercial sex industry and were looking for employment. They wanted to help–so they had the idea of creating a line of scarves, and provided the training these women to make them. They ended up selling over 4,000 of these scarves back home, and the company has never looked back. They're now a full fledged women's lifestyle brand making incredible leather accessories, shoes, clothing, and jewelry.
ABLE is comprised of 95% women, they partner with ethical factories worldwide and publish those fair wages on their website. So you can feel assured that each purchase you make will not only empower you, the one wearing them, to look and feel your best–but also many other women who have created the beautiful products you've purchased.
AND, to make their prices more accessible, they've always been gracious with giving my readers a discount code that works on EVERY purchase–all the time–not just first time customers, not just for 72 hours, etc. (I can't tell you how rare this is, and it truly speaks to the nature of the company).
My ABLE code JESSKEYS15 is my most recent code and will apply 15% off to your ABLE order. (Note there are a few exclusions from time to time!)
So–now that you have a little bit of background on the company–let's talk more about the dress! You'll see I style this many ways, with more ABLE items (all of which are eligible for my discount!) and other items I wear and love often.
*This post is not sponsored by ABLE but I do receive a commission each time my code is used, so thank you for your support of this blog while you shop as well!*
Why I love this dress:
It's stylish, versatile, and comfortable
I love this dress because it feels like you're wearing a nightgown (has some nightgowny aesthetic vibes too, which obviously I am here for), it's super roomy to accommodate various life stages, it's the right amount of classic feminine meets breezy boho, and best of all–it's essentially a blank canvas. You can style it 100 different ways for so many occasions! You'll see what I mean in a second.
On that note…great for pregnancy and postpartum!
I'm constantly being asked for tips on pregnancy and postpartum style–this dress is a fantastic essential if you're in that stage of life. It's roomy to accommodate a bump, and so incredibly comfortable that you'll love wearing it postpartum, too. Dresses like this were my saving grace postpartum because they're a one-and-done outfit that's even more comfortable than sweatpants. If all you did was throw this on with a pair of sneakers with no makeup and your hair in a bun–you would still feel put together, and that makes a world of difference when you have a new baby! The buttons are also fully functional and would be a very easy dress to wear when nursing.
Excellent for travel:
This dress is so great for travel–whether you're heading to Charleston for the weekend or going to Europe for 10 days–it'll be a go-to for any trip. (OK maybe not for…camping…but pretty much any other destination!)
Great for work:
I know office dress codes are changing and become more and more casual, but it's still important to look professional and conservative enough for an office environment, right? How do you strike that balance of professional along with comfort? This dress fits the bill! Wear it with flats, boots, heels, whatever! You can still look professional, stylish, and like I said–feel like you're wearing a nightgown all at the same time!
What else you need to know about it:
Sizing: Runs big, size down. I have an XS and it's still very roomy! I don't think you need to size up even if you're pregnant.
Functionality: The buttons are fully functional!
See through factor:Has zero show through when I wear nude undies with it, does have minor show-through when wearing black underwear. Lighter colored or nude underwear will be no problem! (See my favorite here!)
Now, let's jump into 7 ways you can style this maxi (and any other similar maxi you may own!)
How to style a Maxi dress 7 ways:
Maxi dress with a belt bag and white sneakers:
Perfect for a trip or weekend day out!
Able Maxi Dress c/o, ABLE Merly jean jacket c/o (see review here), ABLE Delilah belt bag–use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off ABLE orders– Freda Salvador sneakers (see review here)
This outfit is perfect for a weekend brunch, or even a day of travel. (I would totally wear this outfit in Paris, for example!) This dress is a travel staple because of its versatility, and it looks so cute with sneakers!
This belt bag is new to me from ABLE and I love it because it's easy to style both around your waist and across your body. I think what makes it unique is it's slim profile–it lays completely flat (making it easily packable) and also fits a surprising amount of stuff for how slim it is! It definitely fits all of the essentials, and I love that it has a zipper pocket that sits against your body–making it a great place to stash your passport, cash–meaning you're essentially impossible to pickpocket!
Maxi dress with a wide belt and ankle boots:
A perfect transitional look!
Able Maxi Dress c/o, use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off ABLE orders–Sezane gold booties (TTS for me but go up if you're in between), Sezane belt
I think this maxi is a match made in heaven for my gold boots. I got these in Paris and I ALMOST didn't get them and I am *so happy* that I did. They're definitely a statement but shockingly versatile and make everything I wear them with look 100x more chic and stylish. However, you can absolutely pair this with any color of ankle boot! I also love the addition of a statement belt to define the waist and make your look a bit more dressy!
Maxi dress with a woven belt and heels:
Perfect for a warm weather or vacation date night!
Able Maxi Dress c/o use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off ABLE orders– Amazon belt, Loeffler Randall Emelia bow slides(size up if you don't have narrow feet)
Same "formula"–but for a different season! See how I did that?! For a more "summery" look, I swapped the leather belt for a woven belt (this one is a steal on Amazon) and my favorite low-heeled sandals. (One of the few pairs of heeled sandals I wear these days!) This gives you a look that is dressy-casual and perfect for drinks or dinner in warmer weather!
Maxi dress with a leather jacket and sneakers:
Perfect for a day of travel or exploring!
Able Maxi Dress c/o, ABLE Maha leather jacketwhich will be restocked in mid-march, stay tuned! (see review here for sizing/details) old bandana but Madewell makes tons of cute ones (plus, how to tie a bandana here), Freda Salvador sneakers (see review here) ABLE Abera backpack purse (reviewed here!) Use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off ABLE orders
Three travel staples of mine: A neck scarf/bandana (makes otherwise "plain" staples look really cute), a leather jacket (layers are always key, and a leather jacket goes with everything!) and sneakers (obviously comfort=key for any trips where you're doing lots of walking!) This dress is the perfect compliment to all three of these favorite travel accessories.
A special shout out to the Abera backpack purse here: It was the purse I brought to Paris and it's the ultimate travel essential! Small, but super roomy (I can even fit my whole jacket inside of it if the weather heats up!) and best of all–keeps your hands free! Whether you're shopping and need both arms, biking around the city sightseeing–this is a great bag for anyone on the go! (You can get 15% off with code JESSKEYS15). I also highly recommend getting some leather conditioning cream to keep it looking great (plus, it helps protect the leather as well!)
Maxi dress with a statement belt and flats:
Perfect for the office!
Able Maxi Dress c/o use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off ABLE orders– Sezane belt Rothy's Point flats (size up!)
You don't typically look at a white boho maxi dress and think "work appropriate" but again–with the right accessories–anything is possible! I went with black accessories here as black is always king at the office. Conservative, polished, stylish–and best of all, SO comfortable!
Add a moto jacket to transition from desk to dinner:
Perfect for post-work cocktails!
Able Maxi Dress c/o, ABLE Maha leather jacket which will be restocked in mid-march, stay tuned! (see review here for sizing/details), Use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off ABLE orders–Sezane belt , Rothy's Point flats (size up!)
Self explanatory, but, see how much just the addition of a leather Moto jacket can change the look? This is where my Juxtaposition rule comes in again. The Moto jacket adds the perfect amount of edge to offset the casual femininity of the dress.
Maxi dress with a hair scarf, belt, and loafers:
Perfect for wine tasting!
Able Maxi Dress c/o use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off ABLE orders!Hermes scarf (similar here and here's my tutorial on how to tie a hair scarf), Rothy's driving loafers (TTS–I take my normal size in these and the Square flats) Sezane belt
Last but not least, if I had this dress on my wine tasting trip, this is 100% how I would've worn it! These Rothy's loafers in "Sesame" were my go-to shoe on the trip, and as you know, I can't resist a good hair scarf–especially while traveling! (I never like to waste time washing my hair–so dry shampoo and hair scarves it is!) Plus–they look so cute!!
Remember, you can get 15% off this dress and all ABLE orders with code JESSKEYS15.
Hope these styling tips were helpful to apply to all your maxi dresses!
